Sleepy Cat and the Hummingbird Gang

I am excited to present my most recent finished painting!

Sleepy Cat and the Hummingbird Gang

I designed it a month or more ago as a preprinted canvas.  I have just now taken the opportunity to paint it.  I had a great time at Donna Downey Studios today working on it after my kids art class.

I hope you enjoy it!

Hulk Painting

I am excited to show my finished painting!

I started off with a pro's image from The Incredible Hulk #611 when Bruce Banner becomes Hulk again and saves the world at the same time.  I traced it to get my starting points down because I had never done anything like this before.  Then I took over and finished the drawing myself. After the drawing was complete, I scanned it and opened it up in photoshop.  Due to my inexperience in photoshop my results were lacking despite spending hours in my attempt.  I am however much more confident with paint and brushes. Next, I printed out what I had done in photoshop onto primed canvas. Then I started and finished the final painting.  Here is the scanned image of it.  I hope you like it!

Hulk # 611

I have recently been more interested in comic book art.  I am also teaching a couple camps this summer on the subject, so I thought I would enjoy the challenge of taking on the task of making my own version of one scene in Hulk #610.  When Hulk turns into the World Breaker.

The Pros drawing the comic were the duo Paul Pelletier and Miguel Angel Munera Sancho.
The image in question is this:

Here is my drawing I made from this piece of art.

I traced a good percentage of it because I am not used to drawing Super Heros and their ridiculously oversized muscles.  I knew that if I could get the hang of it via tracing, I would graduate to drawing it from my own head. I did make some changes obviously.  Most noticeably at first are the eyes.  Mine have pupils and the Hulk is looking right at you.  I like that better.  He is more in control of his power when he can see straight.

Then came the challenge of colorizing them with very little photoshop skills. Here are my attempts at using the Mac to paint in the color instead of using a paint brush.  I could have painted it much better and more quickly with a brush and real paints.  That will come next!

I hope this may show you that anyone can learn the basics just be mimicking the pros!  From there you make it your own.  I'm going to paint the original by hand to get the look I want.  I don't have control over the computer like I want yet.

Check back soon for more art!

Homeschool Class #2 - Flower Painting

In our second homeschool class, we broke the 2 hours down into a couple different segments.  First, we had pencil and paper and practiced drawing the vases of flowers on each table.  After everyone had drawn at least 3 finished drawings of flowers, we then moved onto painting them.

Here is the painting I did as a demo during the class.

Portrait Drawings

I am going to be teaching a portrait camp this summer at Donna Downey Studios.  I thought it would be a good idea to post a few of my portrait drawings of children that I have been commissioned to do.
The final pieces are framed and now hang in their owner's homes.

Summer Camp street-side A-frame poster

I created a dark and a light version.  When viewed side by side it is pretty obvious to me that the light version is easier to read in a moment.  Do you agree or disagree?

Collaboration with Melissa McClary

As many of you know, I work at Donna Downey Studios in Huntersville, NC.  I organize classes, make art, logos, etc.  And work towards building the arts community in the area.  One of my Co-workers there is named Melissa McClary, the Studio Manager, has recently produced numerous prints that I have been enamored with.  So I asked her if I could borrow a group of them to collaborate on a series of images.  So the next few posts today will be categorizing them into sub group based on color temperature.  Once I have all the originals posted, the next step will be to add imagery.

The following are part of the Warm Group.

And now, the Cool Color Group

And Lastly, the Abstract Neutral Prints

Check back soon for my collaboration images!
Thanks,
Stephen
